What is a salsa?

Mexican salsa is a vibrant and essential component of Mexican cuisine, celebrated for its ability to enhance flavours and add zest to a variety of dishes. The term "salsa" simply means "sauce" in Spanish, and in the context of Mexican cooking, it refers to a broad array of sauces that can be fresh or cooked, and feature diverse ingredients and heat levels.

The four main salsa categories are salsa crudo (a raw salsa), salsa roja (a red salsa), salsa verde (a green salsa) and salsa de aceite (an oil based salsa).
The salsa we sell at Sonia’s Salsas is the fourth version - salsa de aceite, an oil based salsa. The benefits of these salsas are that they last longer as they are preserved in oil. Whilst they may seem similar to a chilli oil, there is a difference.

A chilli oil is an oil infused with chilli and the oil is the primary ingredient.

Salsa de aceite is a blend of chillis, onion and garlic which is preserved in oil. Here the primary ingredient is the chillis.

You will find a whole variety of salsa de aceite in cantinas all around Mexico. They are full of flavour and can liven up any meal.
